A MOV file is a multimedia file containing audio and video. The video file with .mov extension is a format used by the QuickTime program. MOV files are high-quality video files that are used for recording, sharing and storing. Generally MOV files are larger than other multimedia formats. QuickTime media player developed by Apple allows you to play all your MOV files of different sizes and aspect ratios at high resolutions. MOV files do not play with Windows programs such as Windows Media Player. Converting the files into a different format allows you to play these MOV files on a Windows PC. Files that are saved in the .mov format are compressed, making it easier for download and to stream video from the Internet to your computer or portable media devices. Most of the movies and videos available online are distributed in the .mov format.
Why is QuickTime not playing MOV?
Though QuickTime claims to support MOV, sometimes we still come across errors like "Can't open MOV in QuickTime" or the “MOV only plays audio but no video”. Every file contains a header file that stores all the relevant information about its file type, size, file created time, file modified time, etc. If the header file of MOV gets corrupted, then the result will be very devastating. When a video is played, the Operating System first verifies the header of that video file and then allows files to get played. Therefore, when any of this information from the header of a MOV is incorrect or goes missing, then all your favorite MOV videos can become inaccessible and your media player will not be able to play the file. MOV files may also not respond due to improper termination of the MOV files and codec errors in MOV files.
Reasons behind MOV file header corruption
MOV file header can get corrupted when the computer is interrupted while writing information to a file. For example, if you have finished editing a MOV file and saving the changes, the file can become corrupted if the program crashes or there is a power failure during the save. When a MOV file header becomes corrupted, the file will fail to open or will not play the video file. When downloading a MOV file if there occurs an interruption in the network connection then it can lead to a broken MOV header. In such cases, repairing the file is the only way to access the file. MOV file header can also get corrupted due to:
Virus infection- When a MOV file gets infected by virus or malware, the structure of MOV file can get damaged.
Compressing MOV files- Compression the MOV file to reduce the size sometime results in MOV file corruption.
Using incompatible media players- Playing MOV files on media players that do not support MOV format. Due to this, the header corruption occurs which makes MOV file inaccessible.
Repairing MOV header sounds quite hard but a simple solution exists. The MOV File Repair Tool can repair MOV file header so that you can play the repaired MOV on your QuickTime player without any trouble.
